Bicycle Coalition of Maine (www.BikeMaine.org) advocates bicycling safety, education, and access in Maine. This membership based non-profit organization also advocates for better walking facilities. Their work focuses on developing Safe Routes to School, Bicycle Friendly Communities, and better roadways and trails statewide. Their vision is that as a result of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine's work, people living in and visiting Maine will have accessible and safe conditions where they may comfortably and responsibly bicycle and walk. Numerous resources, tips, events, and a bicycling trails database can all be found on their Web site.

The East Coast Greenway Alliance (www.greenway.org) partners with local, state and national organizations to promote the East Coast Greenway, a traffic-free, multi-use trail extending from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida to serve bicyclists, equestrians, walkers and the physically challenged. The Alliance promotes local trail development through advocacy and increased public awareness so that a continuous & safe route - easily identified by the public though signage, maps, users guides and common services, is established.

The Southern Maine Volkssport Association (SMVA) (http://smva.8m.com/) meets monthly in Westbrook to promote non-competitive walking and walking events throughout the state. Walks are designed to include such varied points of interest as historic sites, scenic vistas, downtown areas, woodland trails and parks. Usually 10 kilometers in length on well marked trails or explicit written directions the walks are meant to be taken at your own pace. Each event is free but those wishing to pay a $3.00 registration fee may participate in an international organization's achievement award program.
